Ever wanted to tackle the Simpson Desert on your GS? Here is your chance to do just that.
The GS Tour Simpson Crossing is something pretty special. First, you will get the opportunity to take in the electric atmosphere of the iconic Finke Desert Race. Then the adventure really begins with the chance to spend several nights under the stars in the depths of the Simpson Desert amongst a group of only 10 riders plus our crew. You will be supported by an expert group that will include BMW GS Off Road Training Instructors Miles Davis, Shane Booth and Chris Urquhart, two 4WD support vehicles and a medic. Your luggage, camping gear, food, water and fuel will be carried on the support vehicles, relieving one of the biggest challenges of riding a motorcycle across the Simpson.
We will depart Alice Springs on Tuesday June 11; during day one there will be some rider coaching along the way eventually pulling up short of the Simpson for the first night. Day 2 we will continue the journey, pulling up for a swim at Dalhousie Hot Springs before heading into the Simpson to set up camp for night two. Day 3 and 4 will be all about the Simpson before arriving out the other side and into Birdsville on Day 5.
The route is designed to be challenging but achievable for the right riders, crossing the entire width of the Simpson Desert and taking in some incredible scenery. Departing Mt Dare to Dalhousie Springs and onto the French Line past Purnie Bore. The route then heads south onto Rig Rd with various options available from this point depending on conditions. The goal is to get to Poeppel Corner and along QAA Line to Big Red and into Birdsville. But we do have other options available if required.
How tough is it?
It is sand so it takes a good amount of skill and fitness. However, we have planned the route to relieve any time pressure from the riding and that helps make the journey a little less stressful. You need to be a very competent off road rider and ready to learn how to be comfortable in the sand. Mentally you need to be up for the challenge, you will have a great support crew with you and you aren’t on your own, but you are a long way from anything so that needs to be well understood. It is an adventure and plans may have to change on the fly for all sorts of variables that are out of our control. Come a long with a great sense of adventure, a positive attitude and you will have an unforgettable experience.
